Founded in 2017 by Stephen Satterfield – a self-described “origin forager” - Whetstone is a Black-owned media company producing content dedicated to the stories of our food – beyond today’s fixation on chefs and restaurants. In 2021, Stephen hosted Netflix’s acclaimed documentary, High on the Hog, which celebrates the influence of African and African American food on US culture.

It's been my privilege to read hundreds of applications for the Next Challenge for Media & Journalism over the past seven days. It was a marathon of mission statements, business models, and technology-driven plans to reach new and more diverse audiences across the United States. I came away from the experience more inspired than ever about the future of media in this country.
